The Process Of Ageing — Why There Is No One Size Fits All Solution

17 January 2022

When it comes to ageing, there truly isn’t a “one size fits all” criteria that applies to everyone. In fact, depending on your sex, age and other various health conditions that may be involved, ageing can look incredibly different for many people — no pun intended!

There are several factors that can contribute to how quickly (or slowly) you age, some of which include:

  1. Bone Reabsorption: Bone resorption refers to the process by which osteoclasts break down the tissue in bones and release minerals, thus resulting in a transfer of calcium from bone tissue to the blood. People lose bone mass or density as they age, especially when it comes to women who have undergone the process of menopause. As the skin of the face has consistent attachments to underlying structures through retaining ligaments, these points of attachment define most of the shadows that develop on the face due to age-related facial volume deflation.
  1. Atrophy Of Fat Pads: Fat pads are areas of closely packed, subcutaneous fat cells that are often found in the face and other parts of the body. Over time, facial fat pads in the upper and mid face atrophy (that is to waste away), thus causing the appearance of “hollows” under the eyes — something that almost always results in individuals looking tired or aged.
  1. Muscle Migration: A major contributor to loss of jawline definition is a breakdown of the elastin and collagen fibers. Gravity can also cause fat pads from cheeks to migrate downward, putting additional pressure on the skin in the jaw area.
  1. Tech Neck: With more and more people now spending up to 6 hours of the day staring down at mobile phones, it is no surprise that we have seen a surge in the formation of horizontal lines and wrinkles that are commonly referred to as “tech neck.” In fact, looking down at technology isn’t the only thing that can cause a tech neck situation—your sleeping position has a lot to do with it too.
